I broke down and bought sunscreen today. It's humid and hot outside. Almost enough to make me want to put on the swimsuit and go drape myself lizard style out in the sun. At least there is a breeze.

My mother is irritated because the freakish weather has messed with all the plants. Her mountain laurels haven't bloomed at all because of the drought. I finally started seeing wildflowers a couple days ago, tiny patches of bluebonnets, primroses and mexican sunhats. i picked up some flowers to keep on my desk, because I think just having them around makes me happier.

I went to the Draught House last night, and it was packed like I have never seen it. There was a mariachi band in the lot! Craziness. I drank a few beers, talked a lot and came home late. It was good. It made my week seem less crazy and ugly.

The grocery store trip provided me with sunscreen, flowers, juice, pop rocks and ten shiny Texas postcards. Who wants a postcard? They're awesome.

Mountain Laurels and the Draught House

My little sister, father, and I have always said that we need to find a big black rock to put in the back yard for basking in the morning sun; we always said that we were part lizard.

I have been working on some of my grandfathers research into my families cognizances/family coats-of-arms.

I miss Mountain Laurels and the Draught House.

They just put up the summer umbrellas around the patio tables. The mariachi band, I have no idea where they came from.

Do you have a family coat of arms? That's pretty fabulous.

Yah… on one side of my family.

My grandfather did a lot of research on it and I finally this year just got the books that he used from my uncle. It only took about 6 years to get the books from him.

My parents only have a few poorly preserved examples of his drawings/painting since my grandfather had a habit of drawing/painting them on pieces of furniture, most of which are either gone or spread out throughout the country with other parts of my family or with his second wife, who I have not seen since I was a child.

The Newtons and Potters have claims to coats-of-arms. Most of the examples that I have access to are renditions of the Newton’s because he was making versions of it while he was courting my grandmother.

In so many ways he was a true renaissance man but he was also a little lazy…
