In the mail today, there were two catalogs. One addressed to me, which presented an astounding array of knives, swords, police style batons and grenade shaped paperweights. One addressed to Tyler, which was full of ceramic gourds, 'arty' pillows, vases and $240 scarves. I wouldn't be perturbed except that my catalog carries a bunch of Nazi replica daggers that are overpriced. Well, at least no one thinks *I* need a $240 scarf or ceramic gourd.

Towards the end of my shift I found myself doing the backup discs for more people than I ever wanted. I was the go-to person in my unit, fine no problem. But I had people from other units come to me. That wasn't too bad until I had to deal with one of my most annoying coworkers who has no clue whatsoever. This person likes to tell you all about their disgusting medical problems and never shuts up when talking. This person also has no other topics of conversation. In some fit of universal insanity, I think all her email was deleted and I really couldn't bring myself to worry very much at 5pm.

The thing that really gets me about the $240-dollar floofy knit-and-crochet scarves that look like someone skinned a Muppet to make them is that you can get that yarn at the craft store for less than $10. I'm so in the wrong line of work.

No kidding. These are a hodgepodge of different fabric swatches stitched together. I can do that!

There's been a national knife amnesty over here (UK) recently. I was horrified by the pictures of some of the hardware got handed in.

Then yesterday there were calls for arms of all kinds to be made harder to get hold of. Which will drop into the background noise as Parliament went into recess a few weeks back & Tony Blair went away on holiday yesterday/!

Big story a while back was of a couple of girls & their teacher (a nun), at a convent school, who set up as 'arms dealers' & managed to order all sorts on the Net. This was done as a school project - to show just what could be done so easily.

*Worrying*

A *knife* amnesty? Wow. I had not heard of that. With gun ownership being such an issue here, I can only think the idea of knife control might just make people crack up.

Yes, well. We had a gun amnesty a while back. It's getting really worrying though, with even some school children (& I don't mean hormonally charged 16 year olds) carrying guns at times.

Guess it's another issue of low self-esteem, bullying, frustration, inability to express themselves verbally (to their satisfaction) & imports from the US. Would you, please, mind watching what you export in future! ;)

Whoa whoa whoa. I think you're joking but I want to address this because it is a pet peeve of mine. The US is not the only country in the world that exports weapons. We're hardly the only nation with a strong gun culture. We do happen to be the only one I'm aware of that had the right to bear arms written into our consitution. Problems with violence transcend national lines and it makes me very irritable that everyone just throws their hands up to blame America for gun problems.

Whoa'd

Calm down, was (kinda) joking, hence ;)

It does seem, however, that many items of popular culture get exported West to East - Bobbysoxers, Elvis, Hip-hop, Rap, Patchwork revival, the Blues, & general gun carrying. It's not all bad by a long way. & I daresay other items of popular culture go 'tother way - the Beatles being one!

Besides which - I also mentioned low self-esteem, bullying, frustration & inability to express themselves clearly first.

I understand that you felt you were being amusing with the comment. What I'm trying to express to you is that such jokes have become tiresome to me. I'm one of the first to admit there are serious problems with the current administration of my country, our foreign policies and aspects of our society. But I deeply resent that we're held up as the source of the gun issue when that assertation is untrue.
