I didn't realize, but apparently there's mild hysteria in some sections of the fandom about Phoenix Rising being held in New Orleans and the idea that some other hurricane will come along to destroy the city again. *eye roll* Would this be an issue if the convention was in Florida? Would we be worrying about terrorism attacks if it was in NYC? Would we be worrying about earthquakes in California? Or even hurricane damage if this was being held in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas? No. We wouldn't. The only reason people are talking about this is because of the media nightmare in terms of what picture if presented of New Orleans, and the media coverage of Katrina.
Point the first - this convention is taking place in May, which is not hurricane season.
Point the second - the convention events are all occuring in central areas of the city where city services are fully functional.
Point the third - many other conventions have already been held in New Orleans post Katrina, and more are scheduled to happen even this fall.

Yes, I agree, it's a ridiculous notion that some other hurricane will come along to destroy the city again. *eye roll* Global Warming. Pish posh! *Sniff!*

Date: 2006-08-28 06:03 am (UTC)The city needs support because the government isn't doing much to help it. This convention will infuse a little bit of money to the business community there so that they know that the rest of the country hasn't forgotten about them, only Washington D.C. The least you can do is make preparations to go there and hope for the best, don't be a Negative Nelly!

Date: 2006-08-28 06:03 am (UTC)But really the point is that I feel this terror over the city being wiped out is a poor reason to not make plans for the future. My plane to New York next month could crash attempting to take off, or be a terrorist target, or crash because someone failed to tighten all the bolts. New York could suffer a terrorist attack two weeks before I go. But that's not stopping me, because all future is risk.

Though I made that mistake once. Someone was bitching about Native American sovereignty on their reservations and I was just head desking over the idiocy and bigotry of what they were saying.
