снег! snow!

It has started to snow now. You can tell it isn't sleet because it is whiter and bigger. My winter coat and hat are covered in melting crystals. No one ever told me that icicles have a strange lattice inside. It makes them look like clear amber holding some fossilized piece of plant life. My car is covered in ice, as are the steps, my balcony, and everything else. I walked to the two different bridges over the creek between me and the road. Both of them are covered in at least a quarter inch of ice. I don't fancy driving over that honestly. I might be able to make it out without a problem, but coming home would be scary. Truth be told, I'm not sure I could even actually get in my car, as it appears to be wearing a solid coat of ice.

I've lost some weight as my coat doesn't fit quit so snug round my hips. Maybe today I'll make some macaroni. The apartment office remains closed, so I don't think I'll be getting my mail today. I just got off the phone with my mother who says the snow is coming down pretty heavy up in northwest Austin. Looking out the window, it seems like it is picking up here too. It makes a crackling, slithering sort of sound. Strange, strange sight to see. My cheeks still feel cold, and I imagine them to be red like apples and fairy tale girls.

*laughs at snowbound Texans* There is a tool called an ice scraper on the other end of every car-cleaning brush sold in Canada - but I doubt it has much of a market in Texas! The edge of a tough plastic (so that it will not scratch your car enamel or glass, but will not bend under the pressure) can work to get the ice off your car, such that the part that holds the bristles on a broom, mop, or brush.

Well, I doubt the ice scraper would be very effective when I can't even get the doors open. :/ It would be one thing if it was just my windshield. But the ice pretty evenly coats the car all around.

Well then, fill a bucket with the hottest water your tap can generate, lug it out, and dump it on the car. If you can send hot water through a garden hose (or have a pressure washer) that would be even easier.

Oh yes, and if using a bucket, it should be in the plural. Buckets. My father used to wash the car after every winter drive (we had a 1980 BMW and the road salt and ice combined would have rusted it like nobody's business) and he would use at least three of those big honkin' detergent buckets to get all the guck off after the drive. We would be on bucket-refilling detail while he was using them.

I think by the time I negotiated the ice covered stairs, the water in any bowl I have would be cold again. We don't exactly have a set up for this sort of thing, because it only happens once every couple years or so. Usually it isn't nearly the bad.

My husband looked for an ice scraper in stores in Texas and you would not believe how long it took him to find one. He finally has one, but we haven't ventured out to our cars quite yet.

I stayed home, and I'm most likely staying home again tonight, as it doesn't seem to be melting off much at all. It's going to refreeze tonight. Did you stay home?

I did. It's way too icy and there is a tree down on the road out of my complex.
