house house house

So I'm watching the most recent episode of Extreme Home Makeover, which happens to be the episode shot in Austin. The home builder who donated their services to this episodes was Jimmy Jacobs, who apparently does a lot of work for both the Children's Advocacy Center, the Palace Theater, the Austin Assistance League and Habitat for Humanity. I do like to see businesses that work to improve their communities. Out of curiousity I started browsing their site. Bad idea.

I fell in love with a house that is so far out of my ability to ever afford like ever ever. (Actually I did the math and it is about 200K over what I could feasibly finance on my own.) Sigh. I knew I shouldn't have done that. Compared to other parts of the country, housing prices aren't too bad here. But it remains wildly unaffordable for me and thousands of other people like me in this town and even working families.

One day I want to have my own house. Of all goals related to careers and prosperity and personal achievement, I want a house. I want a house, with trees, bookshelves lining a wall, a yard, big windows, a giant bath tub, and a kitchen big enough to spin around in while making pies on shiny counters.

Those are amazing.

And there are some close enough in price range that, if we sell our place which obviously we'd have to do, would be possible if we pinched our pennies.

Though--

The way our credit is now we never could.

But here, we could never afford a house half of that.

I keep saying someday, but I don't think we'll ever end up anywhere with a yard.

Which one did you fall in love with? The ones beyond our price range were even prettier.

I really like this floor plan but the other one is also nice. I keep imagining the lives I would live in houses like this.

...the porches on the second one. WANT.

How much do those run, dare I ask?

Oh my god yes. Porch! On a lot with lotes of live oaks.

They are about $350K.
