From my mother's email update to the prospective owners:
Okay everyone, we're back. Sorry we missed you last week. Here's puppy
update....
They are 5 weeks old today. So many 'firsts' this last week. They are
all weaned now. Lyric surely must be relieved. Pups are getting very big
and have many sharp little teeth. I am feeding Pro Plan Large Breed puppy
food. (This is NOT one of the recalled foods.)
We are spending time outside every day now. The yard is SO exciting! It
has been interesting to watch each pup as they explore farther and farther
from 'base'. I am very excited to see so many busy noses. The pups are
picking up objects and carrying them around. Usually looking quite pleased with
their objects. This expanded environment allows us to introduce more
surfaces, toys, sounds and physical obstacles. Pups also show a natural
inclination to move away from 'base' and out into the yard to relieve
themselves. (Good job Lyric for keeping them so clean)
Most of their activity this week has been centered around interacting
with each other. Pups are learning the basics of how to be a dog. They
practice a wide variety of vocalizations. It's always funny when one discovers how
to howl. All the others come running to investigate this new noise and
sometimes try to join in. This is also a good way to rouse the humans at
6am. Pups practice dominance and submissive behavoirs with each other, but
have not sorted out a hierarchy yet. All take turns being on top and
making fierce growling noises!
They are now moving into socialization stage. We make sure there is
alot of human contact every day. Also that the pups receive an equal amount of
'down time'. Puppies must learn how to behave when the humans aren't around, too
much handling is as bad as not enough. Each pup now receives individual
attention every day away from the litter. We have invited a wide variety of human
'toys' over to play with the pups. Pups will learn that humans
come in many shapes and sizes, all bringing affection and praise!
Puppies will be ready for their new homes April 14. I don't know what
we will do when they are gone. It is a morning ritual here for us to have
our coffee sitting in the 'nursery'. I am so pleased that owners are opting
to come get the pups. We can't wait to meet you.
