Should someone go to prison for stabbing a dog 27 times? Um, how is this even a question? The defense argument is that the woman was so "distraught" over a bitter divorce that she stabbed the dog twenty seven times after a confrontation she initiated with her ex-husband. I'm sorry but that is the most piss poor excuse for bad behavior I've heard recently. I can't believe the woman rejected a plea bargain of eight years, because the charges could land her substantially more. I understand people do crazy things under stress, but this is beyond what is sane. Actions like this do mean a person is a danger to others.

(Though this lame excuse doesn't top the mother I spoke to one day last year who informed me that her daughter must be lying about the sexual abuse by mother's boyfriend. Her reasoning was that her boyfriend volunteered with disabled children and MADD, so he couldn't possibly be capable of such an act. Meanwhile, I was wondering where the hell he volunteered.)

I so should have purchased Epic T-Shirt of Ganking for a couple birthdays recently. Brilliant. I've seen some hilarious WoW related shirts, but I especially like that one.

I've stopped feeling bad about totally missing a trip to Lush in New Orleans, because I ordered bath bombs from Fantasy Bath and completely forgot about it. Mmm currants and key lime pie baths are in my future.

My last call was about a bunch of kids who are literally across the street from my office. It's cracktown central over there, because it is east of 35 and those poor kids don't need to be there alone. I wish I could leave the office to go pick them up, cause that baby momma isn't getting out of jail anytime soon.

I think all the animals that people eat that are severely tortured their entire lives have it much worse than that dog. I don't see how someone can find one okay and the other not okay.

I'm not addressing the often grotesque practices of large scale agribusiness here. I'm annoyed that someone is using an extraordinarily pathetic defense to excuse a fairly excessive act of violence. That is pretty much the entire point of the paragraph I wrote about the story. I also don't especially like the implication made in your last sentence that I'm somehow holding a double standard or being a hypocrite here because I eat animals.

So your commentary was about her motive, not her act?
If it is in some way about her act, isn't that a double standard? I'm not saying you're an evil person, just imploring you think about it.

My commentary was that anyone who thinks they should avoid jail time for assault and animal cruelty charges because they were "distraught" over a divorce is really the sort of moron we should lock up for the general well being of society. I also think the act is fairly heinous in that it was a very deliberate act of cruelty. The abuses of factory farming are also pretty deliberate cruelty, and I think those in the agribusiness should be prosecuted for that.

I don't think it is a double standard to be an omnivore and deplore acts of cruelty. That's pretty absolutist rhetoric. I think that one can hold pretty responsible standards of behavior and still eat most things.
