Thank you for the many good wishes for my 27th birthday. The day on Sunday was a very nice one. My mother gave me a blue shirt with Marshmallow Peeps on it! Mwuhah. She also made my favorite birthday cake, the white layer cake with raspberry filling and chocolate icing. One of the drug company reps who visited her clinic gave her a fancy Russian candy bar, so I got that as well as hilarious cow and cat oriented things.

My grandparents, my aunt Tricia, my cousin Rob, my aunt Cindy, and my cousins Ashley, Eric and Trevor all came to Austin on Sunday for lunch. We ate at Luby's of course. My aunt Tricia was terribly excited to finally get to see and play with the puppies at my mother's house. I was also sort of surprised at how large my cousin's baby was, but then I haven't seen Trevor in ages. My sister's friend Jenny stopped by for cake, and brought me big red flowers too, so I have even more.

In the evening, I watched last week's Sopranos and ate a burrito while doing some laundry. Then Tyler and Sarah came over to have drinks, and there was general merriment. Mike's friend Dario stopped by later on, and then we turned Sarah loose on Guitar Hero. I think we have given her a new hobby. I drank too much champagne and slept like the dead, it was good.

Sarah gave me Revolution at the Gates: Selected Writings of Lenin from 1917. I confess that I've not read any of Lenin's actual writings despite all those Soviet history courses, so I'm looking forward to it. The cover of the book is very strange. It shows a statue of Lenin on a roof, but in the very lower right corner, there's part of an American flag. The photo credit indicated the picture was taken on Houston street in New York City. Now, I am dying to know what building that is, and who put the statue there. I'm already making up stories.

Now I can emulate ANthony Bourdain and be awesome in the kitchen. Les Halles Cookbook was my gift from Tyler. It is a very beautiful cookbook, and I can't wait to make some things out of it. The chocolate hazelnut tart, the clafoutis, and pig's heart. Mmm so much delicious French cooking that I could cry. I need a house with an enormous kitchen, a pantry and some knives!

It was a good day. I just put some more water into my flowers. Now I need my coffee, some more cherries and some bread.

That would be an apartment complex called Red Square; happy birthday, by the way! (And also, thank you for the kind message.)

Well, I tried, but the Lenin statue is about 50 feet in the air; from street level, it's about this big (.) However, should you make it back to NYC sometime, it'll be easy to find: it's the big building with the clock on top, around the corner from where Rach used to live. (Check out the Tim Burton-looking metalwork in the dentist's office on the ground floor, too.)

Just last night I returned my friend's copy of Les Halles which he'd let me borrow (and gave him the Voodoo Spice I got at the French Market, because what every gourmet cook needs is some voodoo spice). There are some fancy potato dishes (and the fries!) and a pork loin cooked in milk that I thought looked kinda interesting.

Next time I see you, remind me to bring my Coffeehouses of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague cookbook for you to borrow.

I was just recently thinking of buying that very cookbook! How funny.

I am still looking for those buttons.

I was thinking about you last night because I was reading a nursing article. I hope your father is doing alright.

Thank you so much for thinking of my father and I.

I meant to LJ earlier, but sadly he passed away on May 22. I'll be posting more in my LJ including a link to the awesome obituary that my sister wrote.

Hugs.

Thank you so much

I am so sad to hear of this. It's crazy making to try and think of anything useful to say in such an event. I have two friends who lost parents this year, and you think I would have developed something wise and thoughtful. But I hope that you are taking care of yourself, and that you find your comfort where you can.
