So I was wandering LJ yesterday, in my achy, still coughing like I'm going to expire phase, and noticed someone's wishlist posted. I love to get people presents. It's fun. It's joyful. So, the more the merrier at
wishlist_2007. I like the random aspect, so that I might sneak around and fill the wish of someone I hardly know.
I've decided for the family Christmas this year, there's no way I could afford presents for every single extended member who will be there. I'm going to get something for my infant cousin Trevor, cause buying toys for kids is fun. But for all the adults, I'm going to reprise last year's idea and make charitable donations in their names to various groups they would support. It went over very well last year. Let's face it - there is nothing I could buy that my grandparents couldn't get themselves, and they certainly have so much "stuff" anyhow.
STEP ONE
Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ (and link it here, OR post it direct to this community). The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fun ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
If you wish for real possible things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post so that the holiday joy will spread.
STEP TWO
Surf around this community, or your friendslist (or friends' friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it. Once a wish has been granted, it will be crossed off my list.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.
There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.
1. Being able to afford the last bits of major dental work I need - I still have to have two crowns done on molars that do not look so hot. I live in constant terror of them breaking. It's going to cost me a couple thousand to get them taken care of, due to lack of dental benefits and the fact that I see a specialist for super phobic people. I keep hoping to find a satchel full of money, but I'm afraid it will probably turn out to belong to drug dealers and Javier Bardem will kill me for it.
2. Coffee - I love coffee. I love making coffee, I love smelling coffee, I love drinking coffee. I have this cute French press pot that needs to be used every day. (I especially love Texas Coffee Traders.) I love to try new beans, new blends, drink flavored coffee, anything so long as it has caffeine. Gift cards to places that sell coffee also work.
3. I have an Amazon list of books, movies and music I'm craving. You can never have too many books or DVDs, right? I read too fast for my own good.
4. Everyone knows I love the shiny. So pretty shiny things from Wyrding Studios would be awesome. They offer gift certificates now, and I have a wishlist on the customer forum.
5. I love soap, bath products, lotions, bath bombs, anything that smells nice. I love small businesses with unique scents, handmade soaps and lotions, giant bath bombs, or any other delicious smelling product. I like foody scents, and flowers, and mint. Some of my favorite places are:
Villainess
Super Bad
Althaea Soaps and Herbals
Bath & Body Works
Fantasy Bath
Isle of Eden
6. A washer & dryer set - we have the space to hook them up but we don't have the appliances. I am tired of laundromats. I want to be able to wash clothes in the middle of the night without having to leave the house. I want to be able to run my blankets in the dryer to make them warm and fluffy. Much as I love the super fancy stuff that's come out in the past few years, all I really want is a functional set of appliances.
7. Kitchen supplies- I need a jellyroll pan or two, a nice non-stick cookie sheet, or some 8" springform pans. I could really use a spice rack, since my pantry has wire shelves so nothing can stand up right. I could really use one of those tiny food processors to chop things to bits, or some good kitchen knives. We really need a nonstick pan or two, cause I am so tired of trying to scrub the one skillet big enough to work with.
8. Mike needs a new computer desk chair. He's using this weird, institutional relic form the late 70s, and has recently had to pad it with some towels tied in twine and a couch pillow. He likes to lean back, so he has to slide down into weird angles with this chair since it is not adjustable in the slightest. (This benefits me because when he's asleep on weekend mornings, I play WoW on his computer.)
9. Gift certificates to the Alamo Drafthouse, greatest movie theater in America. We spend a lot of time there, and it's where we met.
To reach me, send me an email at amajan [at] gmail [dot] com. My address is okay for third party sellers on Amazon.
