SUP = Putin friendly /Flagging for political opinion

http://thelastgoodname.livejournal.com/190219.html

This post is one you need to read if you are concerned by 6A jumping the failboat and selling off Livejournal. SUP is a company you should worry about, all mafia jokes aside. The concerns that the real issue behind flagging posts is one of political opinion and free speech is of genuine concern. Yeah we could shrug and say "Oh well, it's Russia, what can you do?" But I don't think we should. If we are citizens of a global network, we need to fight for all of us to have the same right to express our opinions.

SixApart - you fail.

Wow, somebody who thinks this might call for a less flippant response than recycled Yakov Smirnoff jokes? Amazing.

Sigh.

My first reaction yesterday was to figure out a way to download all of my content and go elsewhere. All I could think was that I'd better do it fast before it disappeared and I lost my chance.

This is just one more nail in my Live Journal coffin. But I love LJ and I don't want to let go.

I hope to be able to. I just can't have anything happen to the journals I have on LJ.

If you figure out a way, I would love to know it. I think it would be smart at any rate, considering LJ sometimes randomly deletes entire journals without prior notice. I'm seriously considering ponderously going through and copying and pasting each and every entry into a word document, but then I am freakishly out of date technically speaking.

LJ Archive works well--you install the software and then it downloads journal and comments. I used it today with an old journal I was going to delete anyway and it wasn't that difficult to work with. Just FYI.

No problem! There's also LJ Book, which turns your journal into a PDF file (though it doesn't save comments, just entries), but everyone's using it right now--gee, I wonder why--so you might not be able to get into the system there.

Thank you thank you!

You can import that exported/backed-up content to the free Wordpress software. Not sure if the free hosting on Wordpress.com offers this, but if you have your own webhosting, you can import it there and revive a blog.

Thank you for the great tip!

Yet another reason why all my new blogs are on wordpress.com or on my own hosting using Wordpress software. Free, open source, etc.
