For the past week, the cat determinedly attacks the corner of the rug by the stairs. He becomes quite animated, kicking and clawing. It is sort of odd.

I am stupid tired and I don't know why.

Cat needs a scratching post. They'll pick an arbitrary thing that stretches their claws if nothing like "prey" presents itself. You can solve this by getting a post wrapped in hemp rope set up -- the cat will attack it with avengence, leaving other furniture alone. I have a really great hanging one that Kat made for me that you can borrow until such a time as I have kittens in my home once more...

And if that doesn't catch his fancy, try getting one of the "on the floor" ones - either cardboard, carpet, or sisal. Some cats prefer horizontal clawing, as opposed to vertical - Norah loves her scratching post, Gustav despite my best efforts still uses the carpet.

He's got one of the cardboard type, and uses it. He just has those "invisible rat" moments where he runs around like mad. He seems a horizontal type - he's never gone for any of the furniture. Just the rug it seems. Maybe he hates the rug?

a) Is it a big enough scratching post for both cats? Gustav may be getting out of Norah's way and letting her have that territory.
b) Try putting a bit of catnip directly on the scratching post for one evening, and keep Norah away from it while Gustav explores.
