so I just say goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

An action packed day. I turned in the keys to the old apartment, ensuring I will never have to be in that creepy space again. I noticed some new rodent droppings, surprise surprise. thankfully now I have all the cleaning supplies at the house, making life much easier. I mopped the kitchen, which is an onerous chore. Watering the yard is much more fun. You get to play with the hose, and walk around outside contemplating the lives of the neighbors.
No progress made on the books today. But yesterday I did acquire an awesome IKEA shelf for super, super cheap from someone two blocks over. Mike reassembled it last night, and so temporarily our shelving crisis is averted. I can't help that the book population keeps exploding with things like Caitlin Kiernan's Daughter of Hounds and Sana Krasikov's One More Year. (Both of which are superbly awesome and should be purchased immediately to encourage the authors to create more such books.)
Last weekend I promised Mike a pie, and today I got around to actually making one. Usually I use Guittard chocolate for baking, as a variety of their chips are available in HEB. I recently picked up their new product, Akoma extra semisweet chips. It's fair trade chocolate from West Africa, and is even more delicious than the regular semisweet kind. Making the pie filling today was an exercise in restraint - I wanted to eat it right out of the pan. Right now it must cool and set before I can whip up some cream to top it off.
Maybe that's how I can win LJ Idol - bribe everyone with my super delicious chocolate strawberry pie. Hah. I'm somewhat relieved that reaction to my first post has been positive. The topic was "Saying Goodbye," and I went through a half dozen false starts before I created the piece I did post. I originally wanted to complete it last night but I had to sleep on the ideas before anything gelled. Alas.
Dinner tonight is nachos. Delicious, delicious nachos. I bought crispy tortilla chips, refried beans, cheese and salsa yesterday. My most important lesson from yesterday: when the eye doctor dilates your eyes, just go home. Thinking the grocery store won't be 'so bad' will only end in pain. It's bright, everything was moved around to a new nonsensensical place, and crowded. Underfed women with skinny arms, mean faces and expensive handbags will hit you with their carts on purpose. Possibly they are jealous because you have full fat sour cream in your basket. I briefly thought about turning around and shoving the cart right back, but Frankie wasn't around to back me up in a fight. Since I couldn't read the small print on labels, I bought a lot of orange and mango juice before I gave up and went home. I can't seem to ever make a grocery trip without forgetting at least one crucial item.
It is cloudy outside, a welcome respite. I wish it would rain.
