No head towels, please

Those 'turbie' twist towels for your head, to keep your wet hair out of the way.

Now, towels are useful. A nice fluffy, soft towel can be a great thing. Maybe when you first moved into a place all on your own, someone gave you a nice, practical gift of towels. But.. would you give someone a used towel as a gift? Is *one* towel, specifically one towel useful only for the head, an appropriate thank you gift? The reason I ask is because I stumbled across this gem while at work this evening:

I use my Turbie Twist in the shower as a shower cap and it is great! I have also been known to take two with me when I go visit and I usually leave one with my hostess. It's a great way to say thank you for having me in your home.

Just so you know, if you come stay at my house, please don't give me a used head towel. We're cool. If you really want me to have some towels, send me a gift card for my birthday. Or if you want to say thanks for letting me stay here, just buy me a cup of coffee.

Oh, my giddy aunt!

When I thought I was immune to all the nonsense ideas that crass commercialism could come up with... the used towel serves to boggle me anew.

Thank you for the giggle.

You're welcome. I'm glad to share the hilarity.

Setting aside the ewwww factor (which, yeah, please just bring me some cheap wine or something) of that... really, how hard is it to just twist a towel around your head?

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on the towel - I've encountered oddly sized towels that were just slightly too short to make a decent head turban. If you had *lots* of hair, I could see buying special head towels or bigger towels.

Mike didn't know how to make a towel turban. :O I was boggled.

Pie is always a good choice.

See now, I have something kind of like that which is some material that just SUCKS the water from my head. It's awesome. Cuts the time I need with my hair dryer to almost nothing.

...but I would never LEAVE it for someone though I might give one as gift, if someone has hair they've complained about. but not as a thank you gift.

More a hey, with this you can sleep ten minutes more in the morning gift.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that - with this you get ten extra minute of sleep gifts! Brilliant.

[identity profile] halfacork.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 01:20 am (UTC)(link)

I'm telling you, ten more minutes of sleep?

Best. Gift. Ever.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess (hope?) that the speaker only used one of the towels while visiting, and left a clean one for her hostess? Because I could *almost* see someone doing that.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope your interpretation is correct. One never knows, reading these submitted reviews, just what people are thinking...

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
The more expensive microfiber version actually is very good for quick-drying long hair in the morning, but...leaving a used one as a houseguest gift? Ewwwwwwwww.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Any gift that becomes an immediate chore (laundry time!) is hardly a gift.

[identity profile] delchi.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I read that as bringing two , using one , and leaving the other unused one behind. Maybe I'm just sanitary in my old age.

Pie!!

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you are smarter than the average bear. Your Earth Logic may be too logical. :D

[identity profile] delchi.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Also : what would be cool is a head towel that has a print on it that looks like a headcrab when you are done wrapping it.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. My. God.

I bet you could sell a lot of those. That thought, it terrifies me.

*Runs away to hide under a pie!*

[identity profile] fox-c.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
ummm - I actually use them. Not the branded kind, but a knock off that a friend made for me. Then again if you have long hair the chances are that normal towels don't hold it all. . .

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I can definitely see having a towel with the elastic when one has such long hair as you do. The towels themselves I have no problem with - it's the idea that the review writer just left one (possibly used) towel behind...

[identity profile] fox-c.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
See and there I would assume from the passage that the giftor brough one towel to use and one new one as a gift - otherwise why bring two? Depending on the host/ess, I can see that being a very nice gesture.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be the much nicer route. I just couldn't help but picture someone leaving laundry behind. I think this was after reading some hundred odd reviews from the shopping networks, which are usually a strange mix.

[identity profile] solstice-singer.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol. I totally think I'll start leaving a single, used towel wherever I happen to be visiting.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahah it could become a new trend.
