101 update, groceries
Jan. 27th, 2009 02:17 pmThings I have accomplished or made progress on so far:
95. Go to 5 Alamo Food & wine events. (besides LOTR) (1/5)
96. Educate Mike on film classics by showing him 25 classic films. (1/25)
We went to the Godfather Feast. They had acquired a brand new 35mm print of the film, which just made it look spectacular and crisp on the big screen. There are so many details I've never noticed before while watching it on television. The food was "oh sweet lord" spectacular - it started with tiny wedding cakes that were covered in buttercream and flavored with cinnamon. The swordfish ceviche was tangy and crisp, the salad with roasted fennel was earthy. The enormous bowl of pasta and meatballs with hunks of anise scented Italian sausage was too big to finish. I just wanted to eat and eat until I exploded. Then there was a dessert of cannoli, with slices of orange.
88. Cook at least two new things from each cookbook I own. (4/40)
I counted seventeen cookbooks, but I think there are more lurking and I'll probably buy more anyhow. I made red cabbage and bacon filled bread dumplings out of my Polish cookbook. Originally I intended for it all to combine into a stew, but we ended up with seared steaks instead. I also made a chocolate sponge cake and a chocolate frosting from my Cake Mix Doctor book. I happen to think cake mixes can be useful for some things, and are useful if you have to turn out something fast. Plus, without that book I would never have discovered that one can take a pint of softened ice cream, combine it with a box of cake mix and bake a perfectly awesome cake. Now if that is not the greatest 3am I can't sleep/Sunday I'm hungover/I don't want to go to the store idea ever!
53. Go to at least one concert. (done)
Done. The TransSiberian Orchestra thing for Mike.
17. Do sit-ups/crunches every day for one week. (7/7)
Of course, I make it a week and then stop. So now I have to start all over to make it a month.
3. Put $10 a week into savings for ten weeks. (4/10)
The hardest part is actually remembering to make the money transfer.
8. Use canvas/reusable shopping bags for every grocery trip.
93. Eat more fruit.
I am doing well with these - I have my bags with me whenever I go to the store. I try to make sure half my snacks are fruit, and I'm not above eating canned pineapple. (I hate slicing up fresh pineapples, because they prick and burn) I make sure to drink real fruit juice that isn't made from high fructose corn syrup.
In other news, it is cold. Bring on the hysteria, bad driving, grocery hoarding and other assorted madcap behaviors seen here whenever weather is "extreme!" Oh local weathermen and weatherwomen, don't you have any fun things to do besides this? I went to the grocery to acquire some pie baking materials for Mike's 3 year anniversary NI Pie Trifecta, and some things to eat for meals. Plus, popsicles. Mmm.
The grey skies are so much more bearable in the cold.
