Oh the internet. I can't even quantify my emotional reaction to it all within the past two weeks. I don't think I've waded through so much wank since 2003 when we were running around shouting OMG MY HED IZ PASTED ON YAY!!!1!1!! and talking about the Victoria Bitter saga. But this time it is more unpleasant, largely because it hits closer to home.

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people and their aversion to innocuous vocabulary? I will now attempt to use peerage in every conversation. I haven't seen vitriol like the DW fandom since the Pawn to Queen email wars and I think maybe this is even worse.

I've finally lost patience with LJIdol and all its assorted shenanigans. Oh the internet. Why must it always be such a pain?

ZOMG! PASTEDE!

(I was there for that, yay!)

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, there hasn't been anything that funny in ages!

[identity profile] halfacork.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 01:31 am (UTC)(link)

...Victoria Bitter?

Do I want to know?

[identity profile] halfacork.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 02:28 am (UTC)(link)

AHAH!

How could I have forgotten about that?

Thanks for the link!

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, you don't remember her? The woman who claimed to be Elijah Wood's brother and whatnot? Who channeled the spirits of hobbits? Oh man, that was probably the greatest fandom insanity of all time.

[identity profile] halfacork.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 02:29 am (UTC)(link)

I don't know, fandom is always full of surprises!

[identity profile] spydielives.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Why does the LJI stuff hit closer to home? I really do not understand what is going on.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not LJIdol that bothers me as much as the fandom wank, because I have much more of an emotional investment in fandom.

"I haven't seen vitriol like the DW fandom since the Pawn to Queen email wars and I think maybe this is even worse."

As I said in someone else's journal (one of the targets of said vitriol, I am guessing), DW fandom is the absolute, hands-down worst I have ever been in. I don't care what anyone says, I've been in both and Harry Potter fandom doesn't even begin to compare. Running away from it the past couple of weeks has been like being released from prison.

I will say that my current opinion is that HP is _crazier_ but DW/TW/SJA is nastier.

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on both counts. HP was (perhaps still is, I'm not in it anymore) full of dipsticks, wankers and loony tunes, but there were plenty of ways to minimize your contact with them. DW is just...they follow you, everywhere. Even when you haven't said a word about the damned show in months. Another friend just got torn to shreds because someone else who was at Gally One with her heard her say something not slavishly praiseworthy about the anonymeme on a panel, ran to their laptop to report her to The Self-Appointed Authorities and they were off to the races. I find that seriously creepy.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
that's particularly disturbing to me because my overall experience of Gally was that it was made of love. The idea that the online crazy spills over into something so fun and in a place where the idea of actual flesh and blood humans is supposed to curb the bad behavior of the Internet is quite unsettling.

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Extremely unsettling. As the friend said, at this point Internet DW fandom is so poisonous for her that cons are the only place she feels relaxed enough to talk to other fans, and then this happens.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
You know, the "girl!fandom" panel had some reactions on it I just didn't get at the time -- peopel vey much talking about things like stepping away from the net for couple of weeks because it was so bad, or describing RaceFail largely in terms of involving people ganging up on each other and I was a bit "WTF?" but now that I've experienced this shit first hand (as part of TWH, as part of my collaboration with Kali, and for my own use of apparently unusual words (peerage? really? peerage?), I groke the lens through which the people that said those things spoke. It's fucking freaky.

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've had my share of personalized dustups with other fans in the past (in which I've occasionally been just as stupid as anyone else), but I've never before attracted such seething hatred because...I read books? I can spell words of more than two syllables? I commit the cardinal sin of realizing I'm intelligent and acting on that knowledge? The meme's incessant self-congratulation at how it "calls people out" who apparently need to be taken down a peg or two for their "bad attitudes" is just, yeah, keep me the hell away from your little Pol Pot fantasies, please.

[identity profile] alainn-sorcha.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
DW? What fandom is this?

[identity profile] silentjack.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I believe Doctor Who fans would take issue with any sort of fandomness. I mean, as an ardent lifelong Dr watcher, there's enough fodder between the "canon" and the various doctors and escapades to keep everybody busy sorting it out. I never thought there would be a necessity to add fanfic... And from my end, anyhow, Dr Who fans are relatively chill. (That is, those of the fanbase who came of age during Tom Baker, not David Tennant) This is just sort of confusing. Anyhow... My apologies on behalf of the internet world (or the lame wank part of it, anyhow).

I'll one day bake you a pie in the shape of a sonic screwdriver, or a Tardis cake. Which I believe may have already been done. I'll google it and get back to you.

[identity profile] siria.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
... I have no idea what you're talking about... but somehow I'm strangely grateful for that. I think we've all seen way too much unnecessary lj-drama over the years.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah - fandom wank isn't nearly as hilarious as it once was.

[identity profile] norda.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The Internet has made my head and heart hurt much this week, and made me reiterate my stance that I am a fan who hates fandom.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom has given me a lot of great experiences and friendships. It does have some viper pits though, which are pretty deadly.
