Author JG Ballard died Sunday morning.

What terrible news on a bright, sunny morning. James Graham Ballard is one of my favorite authors of the modern era. His terrible dystopias did not have heroes or reasons - they just were, implacable as the concrete islands or high rise buildings against the sky.

It must be strange to be comforted by such stories, but I was. I am.

One of my most treasured books is a first edition hardback of High Rise discovered ten years ago in Half Price Books.

Wow, I hadn't heard this news. Godspeed indeed. I have only read bits of his work besides "Empire of the Sun," but there are images in that novel that simmer to the surface of my brain all the time. Powerful, terrifying writing.
