on the streets of Iran

I wept, reading Robert Fisk's account of the streets in Tehran. It reminds me of old school journalism, and a world less jaded. It reminds me too of late 2001, when I read the news and looked at people around me and knew this was one of those things that meant nothing would really be simple.

Several videos have emerged showing the Basij forces firing into the air and into the crowd around their headquarters. (And let's be clear, they were shooting long before the building was set on fire.))

The second video is especially horrifying, for the shaky running of the person behind the camera and the blood on the concrete. It shows a young man shot in the stomach.

When I first got on the Internet, BITNET, in 1990, I wound up on a mailing list for the remains of the Tiennamen Square protests. No one else I knew had Internet, other than the dishy head of our honours program, and he and I would email all the time about that and about Twin Peaks and about how we were watching the world being saved, little by little, with two tin cans and a piece of string.

20 years on, and not much has changed.

The greatest drawback of not working at the JHC anymore is the lack of attention I pay to news and current events.

I need to spend some time learning about what's happening over there.

I know what you mean, it's painful in so many ways. Not just to watch the protest and the violence, but the disenfranchisement, the culture war for freedom blunted by state power yet again. There are so many stories that need to be told in Iran right now.
