Michael Mann's films are incredible in their color and shape, the sounds and silences of such intensity that it feels as if your heart will shatter. We watched Public Enemies and I loved the burning fury of the flares lit for the cameras at night. He seems to understand the lives of men of violence and shows them vividly.
It's amazing. It's beautiful. Even knowing the story, knowing before I sat down how it would end, I could not look away. Everything from the actors to the cinematography to the font of the credits came together. The performances are riveting, cut right into the bone and blood. It rivals the magnificent intensity of Heat, which has to be one of the greatest movies about crime ever made. Go see it.
