Walter Cronkite just died. I am so sad, and I feel as if I have lost a family member. He has been one of my heroes for many years, and one of the greatest journalists of the 20th century. He loved journalism, and space exploration. Walter Cronkite was a voice of the news, someone we could believe when everything else seemed unbelievable.

There won't be a constant 24 hour news cycle camped outside his house, or a multi-million dollar funeral put on by a state unable to pays its teachers. Walter Cronkite's death won't cause the sort of circus that happened with a recent pop star's death. But I'm glad of that.

A long time ago, a man taught me how to write in trials of fire. He challenged me when nothing else did. He gave me stories and books and heroes. One of the things he gave me was a love for journalists like Walter Cronkite, who lived incredible lives and told stories that were important. I should not too that Walter Cronkite's words kept me from dropping out of college. He attended the University of Texas but did not graduate. In his biography he wrote that he regretted not spending more time there.

Godspeed Mr. Cronkite. I hope they take you to the moon.

I feel so weird writing about someone I have never met who has this sort of "celebrity" status. (Especially after the sort of grotesqueness that followed Micheal Jackson's death)

Cronkite was my hero. I wish I could be that kind of man.

Amen. He's right below Edward R. Murrow for me on the hero scale. Even though I wasn't alive at the time, I still have such fond memories of his Apollo coverage, among other things.
