I absolutely loathe it when people type (smile) in the middle of something.

Example:
stay off that Route 76 Country Blvd! (smile) Well, unless you absolutely have to have an Andy's Custard....

I don't know, something about that just fills me with contempt. It's something about the faux folksy tone it conveys.

Duuuuude! Speaking of Gwen, are you watching that new BBC series, Merlin? We just saw the first episode and it was SO cheesy. In the best BBC way, of course. And there was a dragon in! And the actress who plays Gwen! And Giles from Buffy is the king! You must see!

I don't mind smilies, as they help balance my more didactic written tone, but I hate inappropriate uses, like when people are utter dicks but attach a smiley to what they say so as not to come off as an asshole.

For example, "Wow you're looking ugly today! haha j/k :)"
