fuck you buddy

"I swore to never be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides, Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim, silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."
- Elie Wiesel

Normally I like to recommend authors with breathless enthusiasm and encourage you to buy two copies of their book in case you need a present for someone. (Such as the incredibly talented Caitlin Kiernan who just published the masterpiece of spooky overlapping stories The Red Tree.)

Today however I have to point out what a raging bigoted, homophobic person John C Wright actually is, and state I will never give him or his equally bigoted wife any of my dollars. (Who was involved in the racefail issues at WorldCon, which now seems unsurprising.)

Growing up, I read a lot of science fiction. It was a cruel blow to grow up and figure out Card was such a virulent bigot, so much that it tainted any enjoyment I might have reading about Ender anymore. Wright is hardly even the writer Card is, so I won't miss much by not buying his books.

I also have to say, as someone who converted to Catholicism as an adult, that encountering such hate filled people who call themselves Catholic always disheartens me. The Catholics I have known, the church who graciously facilitated my conversion, are all such generous, level headed people even when confronted with things they disagree about. Perhaps I have been extraordinarily lucky, but I hate to think of such vicious people as representative of the Catholic Church.

In other news, the carrier Arctic Sea remains missing. While piracy is a valid option, it seems as if we would have heard something by now. It is certainly shaping up to be an X-Files moment.

I dreamed I was on some summer exchange in college and we were on a farm. My dreams have been so vivid since the hospital. I am glad they are not all nightmares now - two weeks of that was enough.

I really hope they show up at a con I'm at so I can give them a piece of my mind. Grrrrrr.

Will you drop in at ArmadilloCon this weekend? (looks hopeful)

I can remember being embarrassed by my parents at various times - I can't imagine how awful it must be for kids growing up now to have to deal with their parents being awful all over the internet. Oof.

I'm thinking I may have to try to go Saturday.

Who steals a boat carrying $800,000 worth of lumber in one of the busiest and most secure shipping areas in the world?

I get that it may have been a trade dispute, not a random hijacking, but - really?... You have a trained team of armed men carry out a well planned attack over a small dollar amount of wood? It's not like you can ditch the boat and run off with the lumber....

Moreover, how does such a boat just vanish.... I mean, we have satellites. It's not like you can cover it up with trees....

And, why does the entire Russian atlantic fleet go off looking for the boat...?

My guess is that the cargo contained some variety of weapon, or fissionable material.

Just a guess, but it does seem fishy.

I honestly don't think that ship was just carrying lumber... I would bet anything there is nuclear material aboard. Whether the government was knowingly trafficking in it, or someone was using a government vessel to do so, I don't know.

Either that, or aliens.

That post has so much fail in it that there's not enough *headdesk* in the world to cover it. I've never read any of his books, but after reading that I don't want to, either.

If he writes his fiction anything like his journal, we're probably not missing much.

I know it's hard, but you get used to it - encountering asshat Catholics, I mean. It's a church for great sinners, just like all the rest. That can sometimes be comforting. And when it's not, well, look to the plank in one's own eye, and all that.

I often wonder what kind of person I'd be without my faith to rein me in a bit. I can't know, of course, but I can imagine - I think I'd be pretty cold, honestly.

I think I must have totally lucked out with my early experiences, to have encountered so many compassionate and sane people. I tend to associate this sort of frothing nastiness with the more out there branches of various Protestant churches. (Which is probably an unfair association but I have known some scary Baptists.)

I know I don't talk about it much, because I find it so hard to put into words. (Growing up without any religion left me without a natural vocabulary to fall back on for it.) But I do always love to read when you talk about faith and the church and all those things. Your posts always make think.

I saved it to my HD, suspecting it'd be deleted. Looks like I was right.

Seriously, WTF.

I suspect something in the universe is brewing up extra strength crazy lately.
