the pitiless sky

The city is finally going to put in serious watering restrictions. The kind that say don't wash your driveway and your sidewalk. I would imagine not pouring water on the concrete would be common sense during a drought like we are experiencing, but apparently not. I have a neighbor who likes to spray down his driveway in case any leaves got onto it. I am tempted to buy him a broom.

The water at Barton Springs is barely moving. Lake Travis is down to 635 feet. We've had about twelve inches of rain so far this year, which is about eight inches less than the average. Eight inches doesn't sound like a lot, but there was a drought happening before this year. I got used to the merciless blue sky. Now it is the clouds that make me crazy. They keep popping up, but nothing ever comes of them.

Yesterday I saw Julia and Julie, which was a pretty entertaining movie. It made me hungry for lots of food. A week and a half until I start getting my vegetables from Steele Farms. I choose them because they offer more opportunity to customize what you receive. I am not a fan of cauliflower, so Ic an swap it out for more beets or cucumbers or something. Plus they have eggs apparently, chicken and duck, from time to time.

I am so looking forward to District 9, but I want to avoid the rush crowd.

Although the water restrictions are kind of frightening, I'm glad that they're enforcing them, for people exactly like your neighbor.

And thank you for the tip about Steele Farms! My foray into small-scale backyard vegetable farming has given me even more respect and awe for organic farmers. Our grand haul in the last 11 weeks (granted, in a very hot drought) has been 4 okra, 3 bell peppers, and 5 very mild jalapenos. My fantasy of growing enough produce for my family has been brought into reality.

Me too - I'm not going to have any qualms about reporting him. It makes me absolutely livid whenever I see him hosing down the driveway. Seriously? Unless someone's egged your house I don't think the driveway needs much washing.

This summer has been so brutal. I've given up on caring for anything but the trees in my yard. In years when it is not so totally horrible weatherwise, it is possible to grow things. We used to have green beans and strawberries and zucchini when I was a kid.

It's not made of sugar, but it is made of awesome.

Do you want to send me the box?

I shall - email me your address and I should be at the post on Tuesday.

What'd you think of District 9?

I am probably going to see it Monday or Tuesday - I keep hearing it is *really* brutal for the first part.
