Fuck you University of Texas. You just gave Mack Brown another huge raise but you need to close the Cactus Cafe for "budget reasons?" Fuck you. I really don't want to hear it. Yes yes football brings in lots of dollars to the university but it sure doesn't help outside the athletics department. Ugh.

Date: 2010-02-01 07:42 am (UTC)It doesn't close until August. It may be that the decision can be reversed if the venue starts making a profit. That means selling out a show every weekend.

Date: 2010-02-01 03:47 pm (UTC)I'm not sure if you've heard this news already, but UT is planning on closing the Cactus Cafe (here since 1979) as well as to eliminate its informal classes (begun in 1971). Apparently cutting both will save the university about $120K. Who can calculate what the loss will be to Austin's community and cultural heritage?

I found this Facebook page for "Save the Cactus":

People are also being encouraged to write letters to the Texas Union Director and the VP of Student Affairs expressing support for keeping the Cactus Cafe and Informal Classes. Letters from students and alumni are especially helpful.

Folks are also being encouraged to attend President Powers' town hall meeting on Tuesday. This is a meeting for students, faculty, and staff to present their ideas, but it is also open to the public. Feb. 2, from 4-6 p.m. in the Avaya Auditorium, room 2.302, in the ACES Building.
Please help spread the word.
