I've been slow about answering comments or replying in a timely fashion this past week. Not because I don't appreciate the thoughtful words or the time, certainly. I've just felt physically and mentally drained. Some of that was the unpleasant side effect of the bronchitis, and some of it was the mental fatigue of plunging into therapy.

One of the great mysteries of the universe is how damned articulate I can be, and how terrible at communication I am at the same time.

In other communication related news, I should tell you I'm going to quit paying attention to the Book of Faces. I'm not deleting it entirely because some people I care for deeply simply aren't anywhere else. But I'm going to hide almost everyone and I'm not really going to read it, except for those handful of people without blogs or twitter feeds. So really, you can talk to me here or on Twitter or email. The aggravation I experience almost every single time I go to the Book of Faces is not worth my emotional stamina. It's not just the crappy privacy policy changes and the ugly interface. It's the comments. Several months ago I had to make a conscious decision to stop ever reading the comments on news websites, and I feel that way about the comments on Book of Faces. Almost every day I read something so painfully idiotic or hateful. Really, what does that do for me? It's no place for me to be an activist or try to reason with people I don't even know. It just becomes an enormous waste of my time.

I'm a few dozen pages away from the end of The Left Hand of God by Paul Hoffman. I think it is an excellent, creepy novel.

My bronchitis is mostly cleared up, though I still cough a little. It's ridiculously exhausting to cough all the time. I haven't felt like doing anything, anything, anything.

Happy Canada Day, my Canadian pals. I'm actually going to a Canada themed party this weekend.

It's overcast and rainy. I'm enjoying it, because it requires less energy that squinting in the sunlight. It is soothing. I love the stormy light of summer.

LAW TIGERS - Texas Injury Lawyers Who Ride. This is a real thing. I just saw a commercial and laughed until I cried. Awesome.

I am looking forward to the Top Chef Just Desserts, because the desserts and pastry chefs don't get enough love. I watched last night's quick fire challenge with some horror - did that girl really say she didn't like pie? When she said she wasn't a pastry chef, the judge called her bullshit by saying "That's a cop out. My grandma isn't a pastry chef and she can make a pie." The offended expression on her face made me laugh. There were some sad looking pies, and I was surprised at the flail and disaster of so many of those chefs. Pie! It's a universal food form. Deliciousness in a crust - it is everywhere! I think pie is one of the best things ever, because it is both incredibly accessible to cooks of all skill levels and something flexible enough to undergo great reinvention and experimentation. A perfectly simply chocolate pie can be sublime, as can complex and fantastic pastry creations. So I have to mistrust on some level chefs who claim to dislike pie or not know how to make a pie.

Is this the same Paul Hoffman who wrote "The Man Who Loved Only Numbers"? If so, he's Science House's new BFF!!! He's coming to watch the fireworks with us on Monday and he'll be speaking next week about chess, math, genius and madness. He is an scaaaaaaary smart and incredibly nice dude.

Catching up on LJ... I'm not a big fan of pie. Objects with graham crackers on the bottom and custard on the top are yummy, and fruits topped with dough crumbles are yummy, but traditional pastry crust pie is texturally unpleasant... doubly so if it has a top and a bottom crust.

I loved the line that his gramma could make pie, though. By now these chefs should know that they'll need some dessert abilities if they're going on a show like Top Chef.

I still like you though, and promise not to burn you at the stake. Crumb crust pies are totally valid, and in fact totally delicious.

The Top Chef dessert thing makes me so crazy. Chefs kept saying "oh they got sent home cause they made a dessert" when it was really, "no, they got sent home for making a bad dish."
