Today, I made two different batches of caramel frosting. They turned out completely different. I'm a little concerned that I've made a complete hash of the cake. The cake itself tastes good, though really mild. The first caramel layer is really chewy. The second one is going to be crumbly. I'm going to send to work with Mike anyhow and maybe it won't destroy my reputation for tasty baked goods.

Poor Mike. Not only does he have this monster cake to take to work, I've wrecked the kitchen. There's sugar everywhere. Ugh. I kind of want to bury the cake in the backyard and never speak of my shame again but instead I'm writing about it here and emailing Mike to bring something home for dinner. I'm trying avoid my tendency to go into meltdown over relatively minor things and trying to stop the cycle of shaming myself for mistakes. Writing it out helps a bit.

The only thing I've accomplished today outside of work is planting a handful of bluebonnet seeds. It is a sad day indeed when my only accomplishment involves plants. I admire people who can grow things and garden well. I'm not good at it and I don't enjoy the labor. (Exhibit A, summer of 2009 when I let all the grass die.) I stepped on a sticker burr and was frightened by spiders. Sad business indeed.

I really need to go grocery shopping for Thanksgiving stuff. I also need someone to open my V-8 juice because I can't get the damn plastic ring to snap loose.

Caramel can be very unforgiving. *pats you sympathetically*

And trust me, the engineers won't care! :-D

Is it a bottle of V-8 juice? If so, try wrapping a rubber band around the top and twisting. Works every time for me.

Dude. I messed up pre made mix cornbread once. Any mistakes you make in the kitchen are insanely more understandable than ones I've made.

Your food actually tastes like something 99.9% of the time.

Mine, not so much.

Vaguely related, I mentioned to Dave my desire for pierogis last night and today he tracked down a Polish deli (which I didn't even know existed anywhere near us!) to buy me some.

I thought I'd share the, "Awwww."

Sugary messes are evil. I remember coming home from grade school one day to my grandmother tidying up the kitchen. She explained that right after I had left in the morning she began cleaning which included polishing the wood canister set that sat above the oven, mounted to the wall. She had used Pledge and after pouring a fresh 5# of sugar into the insert it slipped from her waxed hands. There was sugar in the clock of that stove until she got rid of it 10 years later.
