I have discovered, by happy accident, that crumbles of coconut maple sugar candy on a Balgian waffle are delicious. For years I thought I didn't like maple syrup but I was never actually consuming maple syrup. Now that I have discovered the real thing, I am well served by it.

I should have realized when my experiment to produce maple candy in the freezer didn't pan out. Inspired by one of those highly descriptive passages from the Little House on the Prairie series, I poured squiggles of (supposed) maple syrup on a piece of foil and put it in the freezer. Probably best that I didn't try pouring it directly into the ice bin. Though I was obsessed with creating a slushy, frozen soda and many a can exploded in the freezer in those years.

My Saturday was quiet. I worked, made waffles, cut Mike's hair and spent some time lounging around reading. The news about the shooting in Arizona came to me first on my Twitter feed. I saw an obligatory "This kind of thing just doesn't happen here" quote, from a police officer of all people. I don't think anyone who has paid any attention to the shifting tenor of public discourse, the failure of our country to care for physical and mental ills of its citizens, the fear mongering paranoid hysteria of recent years can say with any honesty that they are surprised or that these things don't happen here.

Writing about politics and such things here pains me. I hate talking about it most of the time.

Oh my gosh-- the one where they boil the sap and pour it into the snow? I love that bit!! Holy nostalgia, Batman!

Hahah exactly that moment! I loved those books for their minute descriptions of food and household tasks.

Real maple syrup was something I did not encounter until I was well out of university, and, like you, I thought I didn't like it until I had actually tasted it.
