Day Two: Nine things about yourself.

1. I have two tattoos and my ears are pierced. I have an owl on my right ankle and a key on my left leg. They remind me to go through things and take responsibility for my choices, Both of them came from hard lessons, stories and grief.
2. While my body is biologically female, I am male. It is hard to say this without a lot of explanation or dancing around what is considered the most appropriate use of the word transgender, etc. It is something that I have always, always known. For a lot of reasons, I didn't talk about this for a long time. these days I try to be more open because I'm working out exactly what to do with my life and my body. (My sci-fi future and body swap robots can arrive any day now thank you.)
3. My college degree is in Czech and Russian studies. It was a degree I got for the love and not to ever really be my work, as people I respected warned me away from the academic lifestyle. I do not regret having such an unemployable degree, because quite frankly I don't like working anyway and I don't want the things I love to be what keeps me insured and under a roof. It is a pretty personal choice.
4. My favorite author in the whole wide world is Josef Skvorecky. His work is the most beautiful I have ever read. I stayed up all night while living in Prague, alternately laughing and weeping while I read The Miracle Game.
5. I love to cook because it is immediate gratification and feeding people is a way to show you love them. I think I am slightly better at making desserts than dinner, but I will try anything. I make a killer chocolate strawberry pie. Also pretty good biscuits, chocolate almond fudge cookies, king ranch chicken casserole and coleslaw with my secret dressing recipe. I love inherited recipes, food traditions, regional variety, forgotten delicacies, and basically all kinds of food.
6. My biggest vices are books, bath products and sweets. On a perfect day I can combine all three into a glorious hour. I gave up smoking a few years ago and still miss it. I enjoyed it. I am often tempted but I refuse to pay the stupid sin tax enacted a few years ago and it is too expensive these days. I do miss smoking and reading in the tub.
7. I'm a bit hard of hearing, because I spent a lot of time standing directly in front of the stacks at Liberty Lunch when I was about fifteen or sixteen. I miss you, perfect all ages club with no air conditioned and gross bathrooms, where I saw so many amazing shows without any adult supervision. I don't regret it. Especially those Reverend Horton Heat shows.
8. I like living in the suburbs of Austin. Aside from my compulsive car washing neighbor, I enjoy the quiet of the street. There's a great Mexican restaurant within walking distance and a Chinese place that does good take out, as well as a gas station stocked with snacks, beer and a paper that prints everyone's mugshots each week. I read it to see if there is anyone I know. It is an easy and reasonable drive to most anything I feel like doing. I really like my house too.
9. Sometimes I write, though I haven't posted much but Yuletide fic in the past few years. I am working more at writing every day, even if only for myself.
