We just watched this 2010 movie called Monsters, made by a British fellow who created an eerie, fantastic film using off the shelf software and a ridiculously small budget by the standards of most such films. I wasn't sure what to expect of it but I have to say I really enjoyed watching. This is one of those films where silence is even more terrifying than sound.

Gigantic things terrify me. I'm not sure where this come from ultimately. I can remember a vivid nightmare from my childhood about the stone Easter Island heads lumbering around inside my grandmother's home and hiding under a shelf on the floor. Tall buildings sometimes frighten me, looming with such immense presence. Maybe I watched too many radioactive monster movies as a kid, I don't know.

I need to finish this story I'm muddling through, and bake some brownies for Mike to take to the office.

You've probably already seen them both but if not, if you like intelligent super-low-budget sci-fi I strongly recommend Sleep Dealer and The Brother from Another Planet. (Both satirical rather than scary, if that makes any difference either way.)

I haven't seen either one but I'm excited to put them in my movie watching list. Did you see Moon? I think that was one of my favorite sci-fi features of the past few years.

I haven't yet but it's in my Netflix queue--I've yet to hear anyone say a bad thing about it.

I really liked Monsters as well. I was expecting to hate it but there was something really amazing about its atmospherics. Unexpected.

I wasn't expecting anything more than a lazy afternoon popcorn movie and was pleasantly surprised.
