free video editing software that's decent?

I wish I had video editing skills that didn't reside in 1999. Because I really, really want some Vampire Hunter D fanvids set to Funker Vogt's "This World."

Add it to the pile of things I should learn to do one day. Along with SQL, but video sounds so much more fun than SQL database work...

Edit: A friend asks below is anyone knows of any decent free video editing software? I know some folks on my flist vid for fandom, so if you have any suggestions about free/inexpensive software please share. Thanks!

Thanks very much for these, I'll try the Avid software I think. Unfortunately I don't have anything like enough time to invest in learning about Linux, at least at the present time, but maybe it's something I can work up to in future.
