Some terrible, cruel impulse made me decide it would be a good idea to watch Natural Born Killers this evening. I haven't seen it since it was out in the theater. I went on a weird, awkward date to see it then and a couple weeks later the boy I was with attempted suicide and everything went to hell. It was a dark, strange time among many dark times in those years.

Watching this, it surprises me that this movie holds up as well as it does. For such a hallucinatory, insane piece of film, it still has a lot of power. (Though I'm going to guess that the violence doesn't seem nearly so vicious to people who've come of age to the current crop of torture porn horror films. I have some vague memory of the outrage about the violence at the time it came out.) Everyone disappears into these roles, especially Mickey and Mallory. I'd forgotten about the creepy montage of television clips at the end. For all the histrionics, it feels eerily familiar to this strange and terrible world. Also it has such a great soundtrack.

I really never want to take whatever drugs Oliver Stone was doing at the time though. I do feel like I need to watch something else now to cleanse my brain a little so I don't have nightmares.

I used to love that movie like mad. I loved 90s film. I should watch it again.

There's a lot of peculiarly awesome weird stuff from the 90s that I want to watch again. (Like all the things Gregg Araki did and crazy French gangster movies.)

absolutely! I can't remember anything in particular right now (Oh maybe Freeway... 12 Monkeys) but it was really a special time for movies.

The Crying Game, Killing Zoe, The Doom Generation, Hard Boiled, Kids, Pi... I'm sure there are a ton I'm missing. So much weird, lovely stuff.

I love this film. It's how I discovered Leonard Cohen. After hearing "Waiting for the Miracle" and "The Future" - I decided I needed to more of his stuff!

"Waiting for the Miracle" remains one of my favorite songs ever.

I'll confess I discovered Leonard Cohen through the ridiculous, dear to my heart Pump Up the Volume.
