UNITED STATES: WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP PUN-OFF

Wretched wordplay is the order of the day in Austin, Texas today. The O.Henry Museum hosts its 24th annual World Championship Pun-Off. There are a series of categories of punning. In a freestyle competition punsters perform prepared material of up to 90 seconds vying for the title of Punniest of Show. In others participants are paired and given topics and time limits from which they must develop their puns.

O.Henry is the author of "The Gift of the Magi":

I think I'll sit down with a drink and watch the Preakness this afternoon. In the meantime, here are some quotes I meant to record.

"The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts... express their beauty abstractly... I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists."
- Marcel Duchamp

"Optimism: The doctrine that everything is beautiful, including what is ugly, everything good, especially the bad, and everything right that is wrong... It is hereditary, but fortunately not
contagious."
- Ambrose Bierce

I slept poorly last night, and crashed after my shower. Woke up to the sound of two Chinese women having a very loud conversation underneath my window. I leaned out and shouted "That's interesting!" in Chinese, which is the only Chinese I know. Quiet out there now.
