the future belongs to aluminum

Blessed, blessed sleep.
I wish my new telephone would do something exciting to justify itself. It is very shiny, and very aluminum.

Oh god help me, I want to be back in school.

more interesting

my life: something near to my heart, since I am quite aware of how fragile it is, and how close I came to losing it.

nabokov: Vladimir, the most perfectly bilingual man ever. how did he preserve that distinctive style across two wildly different languages? Vera, his rock, who made so much possible for him. I have Nabokov to thank, for introducing me to Hana in that strange fall.

neat hats: hats are grand. perhaps I watched too many old movies as a kid. but I love hats, and dream of having lots. Reive has a super cool hat.

newspapers: a dying art in this world.

a simple kind of peace

It is a strange thing that messaging Gene produces a faster answer, even though we are sitting in the same apartment. But truly, it has been a pleasant afternoon, just sitting here, and not having to say anything.

Cooked dinner for the first time in ages, and not just for myself for a change. The chicken came out well, though I think next time I will have to pay more attention to the spices to achieve the balance I want. It needs a sauce, for the pasta, probably something like an alfredo sauce. This is something I must learn to make.

Re-reading Dune for the millionth time, and thinking about sci-fi authors, since it came up on a mailing list today. I dashed off a couple recommendations, and spent the whole day coming up with more. I wish this vast knowledge of random 20th century novels would help me land a job.

This beer gets better each time I have one. So nice to have a friend with these skills. It is also wildly amusing that we have beer on tap in the living room.
