Do you mind?

Watching Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves for the ever delectable Alan Rickman. I love the way he's always curling his fingers and the brutal kiss for Maid Marian. Gene snarked at me for sighing every time he came onscreen. He looks quite fetching in his black underclothes however, and I do love seeing him pull the knife out of his heart. Call me weird, but it's true. Forget Costner, even a dead Rickman is sexier. Sean Connery's random appearance as Richard is funny.

The line about giving thanks to God for beer is pretty great too.

Spent my afternoon in Metro, as ever my home.

I sat on the porch with Sam and Melynda, having a rather interesting discussion on the nature of communication, the lost art of letters, and the subtle differences in voice. The only half way intelligent thing I have to contribute to that whole field is that humanity has had thousands of years to work on the verbal and the written, and only a century to handle the technology that is radically changing all of that. Cell phones, email, pagers, text messaging, twenty four hour access to a world wide network of instant information... fantastic, and challenging to many of us, and terrifying to others. I believe in it, I honestly genuinely believe this technology gives us an unprecedented opportunity to communicate across traditional boundaries. It could help us become better as a people. It could, if we could learn to use it. In this, I want to believe more than anything.

Sam writes fantastic poetry and I never knew. It's got a voice, a cadence and a vividness to it. I love the way he reads it aloud.

There's nothing like standing outside at 5am, with the storm coming in, the leaves blowing down out of the trees and the wild sound of the wind, the first tiny specks of rain on my skin and the smell of earth and sky and water all mixed together. This is Texas.

Sam and I decided to eat pepperoni pizza with anchovies. Mmm, salty goodness. This will be a happy day I think, even with the damp gloom outside. I hopped over puddles in my butterfly sandals, and we listened to Liz Phair in the truck.

Melynda's playing Baldur's Gate again, and shouting at the television because she keeps dying due to large numbers of hostile lizard people. It's incredibly amusing for some reason. She's very methodical about stalking the lizards, and buying crazy weapons.

Gene's gone off to Houston, so I'm going to sleep in my bed again tonight. I've been picking up the apartment as well. Going to bake some cupcakes later, and Melynda will make her cheeseball. Rachel's bringing deviled eggs, yum. I'm hoping Tom will come over, meet some more of my friends, and enjoy some Texas weirdness. It's curious, I'm not really a big football fan at all. I just like spending the time with my friends more than anything else.

I learned early this morning that my friend Nikki is engaged now. I'm terribly happy for her and Dan. They're young, in love, and remarkably together in their plans. There's something so heartening about that to me.

From Non Sequiter, yesterday. Yeah, that says it pretty well.
