thousands of years down to one century
Oct. 19th, 2002 03:29 amI sat on the porch with Sam and Melynda, having a rather interesting discussion on the nature of communication, the lost art of letters, and the subtle differences in voice. The only half way intelligent thing I have to contribute to that whole field is that humanity has had thousands of years to work on the verbal and the written, and only a century to handle the technology that is radically changing all of that. Cell phones, email, pagers, text messaging, twenty four hour access to a world wide network of instant information... fantastic, and challenging to many of us, and terrifying to others. I believe in it, I honestly genuinely believe this technology gives us an unprecedented opportunity to communicate across traditional boundaries. It could help us become better as a people. It could, if we could learn to use it. In this, I want to believe more than anything.
Sam writes fantastic poetry and I never knew. It's got a voice, a cadence and a vividness to it. I love the way he reads it aloud.
