I was kinda hoping Alan would come home after they closed down the bar, but it seems he has gone to Jackie's house. Oh well. I'm trying to decide if it's worth staying up or not.

Too much caffiene and nicotine on an empty stomach are not good. But I feel empty and hollow in a good sort of way, if that makes sense. I ate a little when I got home, to stop the queasy sensation. I watched Gene finish the Friday crossword, hung out with Sarah, Rachel and Melynda. Lost at cards, no big shock there. Passed out chocolate to everyone, or tried to at least.

Melynda and I are going to eat at Houstons tomorrow for lunch. Talk about evil witches and the destruction they wreak on the world. Maybe I should go to bed. But I very much want to drag my husband to bed and talk about all the interesting ideas I have floating around in my head.

Lord of the Olives Now that's my favorite since the Gollum pot noodle commercial.

No greater love than this
I love the trailer for Troy. I can't wait to see it.

Sky Captain
Love the stylized Golden Age look they have here. Lots of pretty people, and giant robots! What more could you ask for in a movie?

Luther vs The Church
A movie about Martin Luther? Wow. Okay, aside from the random and unusual subject matter for a major motion picture, this actually looks pretty good.

Escaflowne
I always need a little more epic anime in my day.

Despite Melynda waking me up at the ungodly hour of noon, it's been a lovely day. We went out to Houstons for lunch, where I had the seared ahi salad with cilantro lime vinegarette, mango and avocado. Delightful and decadent and even kind of healthy. We topped the meal off with a dish of fresh raspberries and blueberries covered in vanilla whipped cream and golden sugar.

Alan was a bit cranky this morning. Apparently work was weird and sucktacular last night. Poor guy. Hopefully we can have a better evening tonight, just the two of us.

UT is having the annual open house and there's a line down the block of people waiting to get into the Co-op. I can't imagine why, but I'm so glad I'm not there. Instead we're camped out in Metro with the wireless and coffee. There's good music on, the weather is gorgeous and warm, and life is overall pretty good.

I'm feeling very creative and engaged. We've come up with a delightful plot twist for the TSW game, I'm writing all kinds of things, and my brain just feels on today.

I just ran into Keith downstairs. He looks the same as ever, sandals and shorts and that smile. Funny how time changes things, and I don't get that same visceral thrill of desire when I stand next to him. Still a gorgeous, intelligent man anyways. He's finishing up the revisions on his book, which should be published later this year. I'm looking forward to seeing it in print, after so many hours of discussion in the basement.

Days like this make me miss my college life.

Riding through the dead zone on a motorcycle. This is an incredible compelling and haunting set of photos of the area around Chernobyl. So much so that I am filled with the mad desire to see it for myself. How often do you get to see the end of the world anyhow?

Amazing. It's like something out of a comic book.

Chernobyl frankly scares the hell out of me. I can't imagine being there, or living through those years. During the time I was at the university I spent a lot of time reading translated articles off Russian presswires, and sometimes sloggin my way through the original. The scariest thing I ever read was about the Ukraine trying to raise enough money to reseal the area around the reactor. They sent in robots to measure radiation and evaluate the interior, and they discovered mounds of radioactive dust multiplying like bunnies. Killer mutant radioactive dustbunnies. I had nightmares about it. I also read the grasses mutate at something like 20 times the normal rate of mutation and growth in vegetation.

One of the grad students at UT had worked in the Peace Corps in the Ukraine. He met his wife there, and she became pregnant. They used to joke that their son Max had a giant brain because of the radiation. The kid did have a big head.

If all else fails, buy a good map and trust your instincts. Trust the palm trees, too I think. Cause the bums, the LAPD and the gas station clerks won't help you. - Nick, on the confusion of LA highways and trying to find LAX

There was a bat flying around inside Metro for a little bit, looping in giant circles. Thankfully it eventually flew out the window after five minutes. Nick is telling me about his insane trip to Cal Arts and the weirdness he encountered. LA sounds like a freakish otherworld, and I am more disturbed by California than before.
