1. You're making a mix for me. What do you put on it?

Oh let's see.
Gray Cell Green - Ned's Atomic Dustbin
State of Love and Trust - Pearl Jam
Somebody to Shove - Soul Asylum
Special K - Placebo
I'm Afraid of Americans - David Bowie
English Summer Rain - Placebo
Juke Joint Jezebel - KMFDM
Scary Monsters - David Bowie
He's Running - PJ Harvey
You Owe Me Nothing in Return - Alanis Morissette
Taxi Ride - Tori Amos

2. Tell me one bad experience you'd not erase if given the chance because of the way it shaped who you are.

Getting mugged on Germany and crying my entire train trip to Brno. I was up for god knows how long on that trip. I drove to Dallas with Gene to catch the plane, flew to Frankfurt, got mugged and had a lot of money stolen, took the train to Prague, got lost in the train station and missed my train, bought another ticket, and stood up at the end of the car lugging two heavy suitcases and a laptop bag. I got on a tram with no ticket and only the vaguest idea where I was going in a city I had never seen before. It was one of the most miserable days of my entire life, frankly. I cried and cried in my bed that night, and I was completely sick because I'd done this stupid crazy thing by running away to Europe. I felt like an idiot.

But being alone that summer made me realize that I am so much more capable than I give myself credit for on a daily basis. In the end it was good.

3. All time best concert going experience?

That's hard. Very hard. I suppose for sheer magnitude and fabulousness, I would have to say David Bowie/Nine Inch Nails. I saw them in 1996 and they played this enormous long show where they didn't stop between bands, just started switching people out. David Bowie and Trent Reznor sang "Scary Monsters" together and it was awesome. So loud, so intense, so fun.

4. It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. True or false? Explain your answer.

True. I believe in the power of experience and information. The more you have, the better. If you've lived with it, then you know something more than you did before and that sort of thing can be extremely valuable. I think love gives us an insight into ourselves and interpersonal relations. (Usually that insight doesn't come until later.) But all pain and loss can offer some kind of knowledge, and that is critical to a person's development.

5. An anonymous benefactor offers you an all expenses paid trip on two conditions. You cannot go anywhere you've already been and you have to go alone. You'll stay one year. Do you accept? Where do you go?

Oh yes. I think I might like to go to Kiev, to see how the Ukraine will change. Or perhaps to Riga, to live by the ocean and old stones.

I remember when this was called the shower meme. You should know the drill by now - ask and ye shall receive questions.

Today I found some nice pillows on sale, and bought four! Such luxury! But really, I've not ever bought pillows. I think my pillows were purchased in 1994. It was definitely time for new ones. These are jumbo sized and firm. Mmm pillows.
