Casper
Casper again

From my aunt Tricia, and the Arizona Corgi Rescue:

Casper was hit by a car in front of us on Monday night. The legal speed limit in that area is 50 mph…. you can imagine. I was the first to get to him and was sure he was dead, and then he took a breath!!! He got up and staggered off the road!!! Amazing!! Animal control picked him up, determined he was stable, and had him sitting in a crate. They would not post his picture on the website because he was injured (so how the heck is his family supposed to find him???) but neither would they give him treatment. He was scheduled to be euthanized today. We “sprang” him yesterday and got him into a rescue program. I couldn’t stand the idea of him not getting treatment!!

His latest update indicates that his vertebra probably isn’t broken because his neck has full range of movement with no pain. The punctured diaphragm is his biggest challenge right now… but he seems determined not to give up.

He looks like a cardigan corgi mix, about 2 years old, male.

Know anyone with deep pockets and a soft heart?

Hi Patricia,

Casper is NOT in great shape! He has 4 or 5 broken ribs, a bruised lung, "air in his body" from a puncture they can't find yet, a possible broken vertebrae in his neck, possibly a herniated diaphragm, a possible punctured trachea, many soft tissue injuries, as well as "road rash." He is not breathing well either, and so he has been put on oxygen and an I.V. line. They are also going to start him on antibiotics tonight! His oxygen levels are now back up to a normal 98/99%, whereas it was in the mid to upper 80s only when they checked it originally.

This poor babe is really hurting, but he is being soooo good, and tolerant of being poked and prodded by virtual strangers! He is a very sweet dog and we are determined to get him through this and placed in the best home possible. This is the first car accident victim we have dealt with in 13+ years of dog rescue! So this is all new to me and I am learning a lot!

If you could get a couple of posters up in the area he was hit, we'd really appreciate it! I'd love to find his real family! But I am worried about the money and if they will be able to afford his bills. The oxygen will be another $500 to $800! Can you believe that? Sigh...

But we truly think he is worth it...and hopefully will be able to raise some funds for him asap!
I'll be in touch when I know more!
Thanks,
Eileen

Casper is now on IV for fluids and pain meds. The diaphragm puncture (and a couple of broken ribs) prevent him from ding too much or eating too much. He is doing ok without oxygen now. His vertebra has been cleared and there is no orthopedic injury to his leg. He just won’t quit.

Thanks for posting his story… who knows where it might go?

I called the local vets today and none of them recognized him…. A white corgi out to stand out in someone’s mind I should think… I can’t believe no one has called….
