Thought I might get a rocket ride when I was a child
But it was a lie
That I told myself when I needed something good
At seventeen had a better dream
Now I'm thirty three and it isn't me
But I'd think of something better if I could
- "All My Friends" by Counting Crows
I always feel clever when I title my journal entries with song lyrics, even though I know quoting song lyrics makes me sound at best fourteen and at worst twelve. It's a bad habit I probably won't ever outgrow. I remember having some cracked out idea in sixth grade about writing a set of short stories linked together by a set of songs. I think I was going to title each one after a lyric or the song title itself. I do remember thinking there were going to be copyright problems with the idea, and thankfully this never came into being.
I did at some point turn in a poetry assignment in my language arts class that was a collection of random lines from a number of songs cleverly rearranged. I loathed my language arts class, because my teacher was forever accusing my of plagarizing things and yelling at me for reading "grown up books" instead of The Babysitter's Club or whatever eleven year old girls were supposed to read. It is amusing and ironic that the one assignment I completely and utterly plagarized didn't even register with her. (For the record I never plagarized any of my papers or creative writing assignments aside from this one deliberate instance. All that bad poetry was mine and if that horrid woman couldn't believe a sixth grader could write critical papers instead of rote book reports then it was hardly my fault.)
So here's a meme. Because if Sarah does the meme, it must be worthwhile. Though I am lame and could only guess one song on her playlist. If anyone guesses #7, #5, #1 or #16, I'll make you a mix cd. Also, the song I'm currently listening to does not appear on the list.
Step 1: Get your playlist together, put it on random, and play
Step 2: Write down the first line from the first 20 songs that play or close to it
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song the lyrics belong to
Step 4: Cross out the songs when someone guesses correctly
