You know I don't especially like to talk politics, if you've known me long. There's something about wanting so badly to see the best in people that makes one so painfully cynical these days. Mostly I don't want to fight in the way it goes now, it seems like screaming at a wall. Sarah and I talked the other night about how it would be better if we just had to vote between Zombie Reagan and Zombie FDR. I hoped silently for Edwards and felt bitterly crushed when he dropped out. There are things about Obama I like, and things I don't, that have a lot to do with political maneuvering. That's not to say I haven't marveled at his victories and loved his speeches the way I did watching Clinton when I was twelve and sixteen. Back when I believed that we could rise above what we are to do something better, when you believe so hard it makes you cry. Back when we talked about the future with hope and not with fear. Back when it seemed like our leaders wanted us to feel confident instead of terrified. Back when I was younger, when I didn't know the things I know now, when things were different.

This thing is astounding as political theater, if nothing else, although I tend to just think it's pretty astounding. It may just be more political messaging to you, but I think it matters tremendously that we've gone from talking about the fall of Rome to this.
