Dum spiro spero
Feb. 17th, 2008 09:19 pmI am home, at last. Koshka is sleeping on my knee, purring away and forgiving us for leaving him alone all weekend. It feels so good not to be in an airport, crammed in a plane or in a strange city. Though we were lucky and our flights did not suffer any delays. The only really awful part was the first jaunt home, as there was a family with a stinky infant, loudly whining little girl and a father who thought he was far more funny than he really was. The turbulence around Cincinnati was terrible and I contemplated vomiting all over the man for a few moments.
Columbia South Carolina is a pretty place, though far smaller than I imagined. We stayed in a nice hotel that had a historical plaque about how Sherman quartered his troops there during the war. The bed was enormous and marshmallow-y. Once I laid on it, it was nearly impossible to get up and do anything else. We the room service, watched bad television and enjoyed it.
Mike has quite a bit of extended family. We had a reception, another more traditional wedding cake and punch. There was picture taking and speeches. My favorite part was the cake, which was chocolate inside! It was amazingly good, and we managed to bring home the top layer on the plane today. There were many cards and well wishes. I have a tiny silver bell charm from one of the cards and I think I will eventually have to persuade Kythryne to make something with it for me. We were also given the fanciest picture frame I've ever seen. My favorite present though was the booklet of South Carolina facts where I could learn about things like the state stone (blue granite) and the state motto from their double sided seal (Dum spiro spero (While I breathe, I hope) and Animis opibusque parati (Prepared in Mind and Resources)).
