threeplusfire: (Suck It Orange)
Yesterday's benevolent weather turned sour and sticky overnight. Walking from the car to the grocery store was enough to make me flush. It is one of those days where you find yourself scrubbing at the windshield and then your glasses to determine if the sky is hazy or if your glass is just dirty.

I bought cheap zinfandel, ground beef, apples, toothpaste, pineapple chunks, croutons, corn, garbanzo beans and a dozen other things. The HEB had sad looking strawberries in waxy chocolate so I skipped them. Last night I ate a half dozen of the Amy's ones and oh they were sweet. The best way is to chomp them once or twice to break the chocolate, then crush them against the roof of your mouth with your tongue to blend the sweet fruit and melting chocolate bits.

While in line I read the magazine covers. Things are not as awesome ever since the Weekly World News stopped publishing. Now I don't know how many alien babies or Satanic smoke clouds are out there anymore. I did see a lot of the woman in California who just had octuplets. Ugh. Humans aren't really made for birthing litters of babies. I find it just a bit creepy. Initially I marveled at how much she looked like Angelina Jolie with those big, pouty lips. Then in reading LJ and the news this afternoon I learned that's apparently the result of plastic surgery and possibly a bit of stalking. Even more charming! Too bad she didn't follow her role model/obsession better and adopt instead. Still, what a wildly irresponsible set of choices. I know some wonderful single parents out there, raising their children and doing things all on their own. But a disabled single mother of fourteen children under the age of ten?

From an LA Times story:
Suleman told NBC that she planned to go back to Cal State Fullerton, where she is earning a master's degree in counseling. Once she receives the degree, she said, she will get a job and be able to financially support the children.

She's going to support fourteen children on a master's in... counseling? And pay back more than $50,000 in student loans? Are you fucking kidding me? I know a lot of people with graduate degrees in psych/social service fields and there is no fucking way. Hell, I know people with graduate degrees in fields like engineering and computer sciences that wouldn't be able to support that family.

MSNBC ran an article on the estimated cost of raising a large family, Yowza! Cost of raising 14 kids: At Least $1.5M. That estimate is probably not even high enough according to the article. Not to mention the emotional/psychological aspects of the situation.

Recent news reports have revealed a tremendous level of strain in the Suleman family. Suleman has no job or source of income at the moment. She lives with her mother, Angela Suleman, in an already crowded three-bedroom home in Whittier, Calif., about 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

I have to wonder how long it is going to be before social services has to get involved.

There's nothing wrong with being poor, with struggling, with being a single parent, with being a parent while in school. These are situations that go on every day. I have several friends in various situations who are incredible, loving, dedicated parents. They may have crazy relatives, college loan debt, bad relationships or other struggles to fight - butt hey are all sane, realistic people. Nadia Suleman doesn't strike me as being realistic at all.
