Today I played a game called "Drive across Louisiana without stopping." It's very similar to this game I played yesterday called "Drive across Alabama without stopping." Both games are satisfying in a weird sort of way. Though that twenty mile stretch of nowhere Alabama just before Georgia where they drop the speed limit to 55 is kind of ridiculous.

In the past week I've driven over two thousand miles, mostly in nine to ten hour jaunts across states. One of my talents is apparently long distance driving, which will be funny to anyone who remembers how little I ever wanted to drive a few years ago. I don't care for it especially, but it beats being a passenger who gets motion sick and can't read. It does make one very tired and stiff though. It would not be fun to do for a living. Especially when one gets stuck behind a chicken truck. Feathers, feathers everywhere! Though having the Saturn Vue now makes for a very comfortable ride. Despite being a larger car, it gets about the same mileage as my previous Saturn.

We spent a couple days visiting Mike's family. I am of the opinion that it is far less stressful and much better to see family in the off season instead of during the holidays. Everyone has less expectation. The weather is still mild enough not to require constant air conditioning during the drive, and the wildflowers of Texas are coming into bloom. Sadly the roadside fruit stands are not in full swing but one can't have everything. We took some of the smaller state highways up to Interstate 20, both to enjoy the glorious view of Texas in bloom and to avoid IH-35 altogether. It was wise. I also drive fast enough that it didn't really add any time.

In South Carolina, we stayed with Mike's grandparents who provided free rooms and lots of food. Cooking is one of the best ways to express love, and we certainly ate very well. Each day involved visiting a different set of family, since a large number of Mike's relatives all live in a fifty mile radius. It was very family and low key. South Carolina confuses me because it is tiny, tiny, but everyone lives so spread apart that it takes forever to get anywhere. Also the barbecue is not barbecue I recognize. Mike's grandmother did send me home with a jar of plum jelly and three bags of pecans however, which makes up for that.

Our cats are very glad to see us. Tomorrow I should get around to baking something to thank our friends who came over and endured the shedding, the meowing and the kitty rage puke. For now I am slightly disoriented by sitting still, and have to catch up on a week's worth of news. (Let me pause and give thanks for the fact that Mike's family does not discuss politics much and so I avoided any stress related heart attacks due to the health care bill.)

I did have to bite hard on the inside of my cheek to avoid laughing out loud when someone mentioned their upcoming trip to the creationism "museum" with serious joy. Ahhh yes.

While driving we came up with an idea for a slot machine that dispenses Arby's sandwiches. I think it will be killer in Louisiana.
