on a good day
Dec. 30th, 2010 09:50 pmToday is our third wedding anniversary. We celebrated with dinner at the Highball, which is currently serving a cocktail that seems dreamed up just for me. It's gin with ginger ale, mint, lime and more ginger. Perfect. Maybe tomorrow I'll write something longer and more interesting about this anniversary and our lives and that persistent feeling of living in a dream.
It's been a good week. Recovery goes quickly. I had not thought it would be so easy. There will hardly be scars at all, it is such neat work. I ache still, but last night it was more the ache of joints and changes in barometric pressure than any lingering hurt from the surgery. Sitting is really the only hard part, and anything that unexpectedly uses the stomach. Like sneezing.
Meanwhile, I must bring you my recommendations from Yuletide this year. I've kept a list of some of my absolute favorites.
My two lovely, excellent gifts:
Keeping Austin Weird - World War Z
Dreaming of Churrascarias - Brick
No Reservations: Narnia
I’m crammed into a burrow so small that my knees are up around my ears and the boom mike keeps slamming into my head, inhaling the potent scent of toffee-apple brandy and trying to drink a talking mouse under the table.

First off, someone wrote a crossover between Anthony Bourdain's travel show and the world of Narnia. It is freaking awesome and hilarious and profane and the descriptions of food slay me.
Golden Girls/Deadwood
The Giants of the Prairies
The end of the St. Olaf Heritage Trail.

I can't believe how weirdly well this works. This story poignantly examines the things we have and the things we give up as we age.
Hyperbole And A Half
The Alot, The Tuit, Mrs. Gradgrind, Sophie and Me, Allie
Allie's mom, teacher and best friend all insist that Alots are not real animals. Allie's friend the Alot is determined to prove that "imaginary" doesn't mean "unreal."

This story reminded me intensely of my childhood, both the mysterious creatures and the time I convinced my entire class there were flying unicorns outside because I was bored.
Code Monkey by Jonathan Coulton
A Day in the Life
Just your everyday guy, er gal, er whatever, going to work, sitting in meetings, crushing on their co-worker... it's starting to sound familiar.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/139499
It's geeky, it's sweet, it's on the verge in that place where we don't have all the words for who and what we are.
Penny Arcade
Snow-manji
The devil is in the dice.
http://archiveofourown.org/static/collections/yuletide2010/works/141660
I think I played a D&D game a lot like this once, though there weren't any dire wolves. This is hilariously in the spirit of the comic.
Brick
Working Title
Before the Pin, the upper crust enjoyed a different kind of pastime.
http://archiveofourown.org/static/collections/yuletide2010/works/139405
Another story from a great movie, this one fleshed out one of the more mysterious characters. Great dialogue, great plans, great characterization.
The Philadelphia Story
A Likely Story
An alternate ending meets a less than elaborate ruse.
http://archiveofourown.org/static/collections/yuletide2010/works/140835
This story captures the snappy, engaging dialogue of one of my personal favorites. I can hear every line in the voices of the actors. A completely believable alternate ending.
The Old Spice Guy
Meta Yuletide Fic (The Fic You Wish Your Fic Smelled Like)
Why hello, Yuletide reader. Why don't you sit down for a bit? Get comfortable, because when you click my link you will be reading a work of such magnificence that you won't be able to look away, even if a crew of zombies breaks through your window and bites your neck.

It's probably impossible not to rec this one, especially if you've played in Yuletide in years past. It's hysterical and so full of references. Possibly the funniest meta-fic ever.
World War Z
Templeton, Iowa
When faced with monsters tough decisions must be made.

Stories of this kind are always devastating. This one is exceptionally dark and sad.
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
Goodnight Room
Bunnies ... in ... SPAAAAAAAACE!
http://archiveofourown.org/works/138868
It's like if 2001 and Solaris and Moon lent their collective deep space spookiness to a child's picture book. Seriously, this story is deeply unsettling. I found it more creepy than most all the zombie/apocalypse fic I read this week.
Threadless T-shirt/Scooby Doo
You're Ready and You're Willin'
The infestation gets worse and worse. They need to resupply, low on food and gas and bullets, and maybe find somewhere to sleep that's a little more comfortable than the back of the van, but every time they stop, every time it's quiet enough Velma feels relatively safe getting out of the van, they're ambushed.

First off, reinventing canon on the basis of a tshirt design is completely fabulous. To do it so believably is fantastic.
