70 and counting
Aug. 24th, 2011 04:57 pmInstead of doing all the laundry in one day, as is my habit, it gets spread out during a couple days. I hang the clothes up in the backyard to bake in the sun. The only real hardship about it is that I have to shake out all the cat hair. But what isn't covered in some hair when you have pets? Anyways, it doesn't take any longer than running the dryer and requires no power so it seems to be a win.
Today marks the 70th day of 100 degree weather this year, passing 1925's record for the hottest year. I think that record is about to be obliterated. The news is starting to talk about the ancient oak trees around central Texas dying. Every time I drive through the neighborhood, I see more bare branches on trees everywhere.
Today I had to run out to the store because my mouse died and there were no batteries to fit it in the house. The rechargeable ones are a millimeter too big to fit. I pass by an office building nearby and always boggle at people presumably on breaks from work who are sweating the long block around the property in the middle of the day. It seems crazy. Just walking outside is enough to break a sweat. Some days walking to the mail box and back, just a couple tenths of a mile, is enough to make me feel like I'm about to pass out.
Last night we ate dinner at Pappadeaux's because Mike had never been there and I had some gift cards. (I ate at Pappasito's in Houston over the weekend and got stuck on the broiling patio for a few hours when the kitchen lost our ticket. The manager felt bad since we were outside so not only did he comp the meal, he gave us gift cards.) It was one of the nicest dinners we've had together in some time - the service from our waiter Steve was the best. He kept our glasses full, recommended delicious food and was generally nice. He even had the manager there comp Mike's dessert since he wasn't completely happy about his meal, which was unexpected. Mike tried to tell them he was buying a dessert anyway, but they still took it off the check. It was unexpected and nice of them.
I am adjusting to my new work schedule, which puts me only working a few days a week but double shifts every day. I think it will be okay. The trickiest part is always making sure dinner is ready close to when Mike gets home.
When I am not contemplating the burning wasteland outside, I am reading a lot and playing video games. Or watching movies while I exercise. I ordered the Maru book from Amazon so that if the oil runs out and the internet explodes and the world slides into a dystopian ruin, I can console myself in my old age with pictures of the most adorable internet famous cat ever.
