through the rain and roads
Mar. 9th, 2012 10:58 pmAgainst my better judgement I went out tonight. It turned out to be amazing and was so worth breaking my "Nowhere downtown during SXSW" rule and braving the horrible storm. (Seriously it was foggy and cold and raining and we saw three major accidents going down Mopac. But it was so worth braving the festival crowds to meet up with a friend of Mike's from childhood who happened to be coming to SXSW Interactive. Jared is funny and friendly and we all have this web of common interests that is fascinating. We talked about the oddities of learning Slavic languages and nerdy stuff and music and the obligatory how great Austin is pitch. We walked all around Sixth street to people watch and I played "homeless or hipster?" the entire way in my head.
We walked Jared back to his hotel and I waited there while Mike went to grab the car because his legs are longer and he walks so much faster than me. (We somehow scored amazing parking on Red River & 5th tonight.) While I waited a (drunk? crazy?) dude wandered in an out of the hotel lobby and then started screaming a lot of profanity and "you know why?!?!" randomly at hotel guys and cab drivers and SXSW people who all seemed somewhat bemused. the guy working at the Sheraton looked like a young Marty McFly - totally cute.
You know, I've been going to Stubbs for more than a decade to see music but I've never sat down inside before! My pork ribs were delicious.
On the way home we braved 35 traffic. I noticed the Motel 6 on the freeway near downtown was advertising $75 a night, which made me chortle aloud. It's how you know it is SXSW time. The traffic was full of semitrucks and one started changing lanes alarmingly close to us. I told Mike it was stressful, and he commented that maybe the random shuffle of the USB stick would bring up something soothing. (A completely unlikely possibility, I said. He admitted with our luck it would probably be "Through the Fire & Flames" would be up next. Then the Dragonforce started playing that very song and we howled with laughter and I promised to blog about it.
