"But time is merciful to unloved ones. We learn to appreciate them when it is too late. Like everything else in life. It is always too late for everything in life." Josef Skvorecky, The Engineer of Human Souls

I found out just now that in January my literary hero died. Josef Skvorecky lived to be 87, in the faraway land of Canada that was not so much like his homeland Bohemia.

I was standing in the bookstore just a few days ago, staring at the shelf and wondering when Josef Skvorecky would put out another novel so I could live for a brief moment in those graceful, glorious words. He has been my literary hero since I read The Miracle Game while living in Prague in 2001. It kept me up all night. I wrote him a letter once, about how that summer saved my life in so many ways and how his novel was a part of that. He wrote me a nice thank you note.

I am heartbroken and can't see for crying.
