that end of the year thing
Dec. 30th, 2012 01:35 pm1: What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?
Went to England. Took up dancing and kickboxing.
2: Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I haven't made resolutions in ages. I don't know if I really have one other than trying.
3: Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.
4: Did anyone close to you die?
Yes. My friend's little sister and my childhood best friend.
5: What countries did you visit?
England, and it was lovely.
6: What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012
More strength. Better clothes.
7: What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I’m terrible with days, so I actually had to look them up. October 13th, seeing Suicide Commando play and shaking Johan’s hand on the patio. June 18th, when I found out James was murdered.
8: What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting the chest surgery, and trying to make myself healthier.
9: What was your biggest failure?
Losing my goddamn mind. Using cocaine that one night.
10: Did you suffer illness or injury?
I caught a nasty cold after Thanksgiving.
11: What was the best thing you bought?
My gold Fluevog boots. Those things are beautiful.
12: Whose behavior merited celebration?
Mike for a hell of a lot of patience. All the people who donated to the charity drive this December. My friends who loved me even when I was crazy.
13: Whose behavior made you appalled?
People who lied to me about everything. People who acted like petulant children. Every politician who tried to restrict the rights of women to control their own bodies.
14: Where did most of your money go?
Plane tickets and music and booze.
15: What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The incredible live shows I saw this year like Rammstein, Suicide Commando, Covenant, and Assemblage 23.
16: What song will always remind you of 2012?
Assemblage 23 - The Noise Inside My Head (Alter Der Ruine remix)
17: Compared to this time last year, are you: (a) happier or sadder? (b) thinner or fatter? (c) richer or poorer?
I am happier, I think. I'm definitely thinner. I suppose I am personally poorer though I think our collective financial situation is about the same.
18: What do you wish you’d done more of?
Dancing. Reading. Swimming.
19: What do you wish you’d done less of?
Crying. Being depressed and not leaving the house.
20: How did you spend Christmas?
At home, enjoying the peace and my Christmas tree. Had an amazing dinner at Parkside of potato gnocchi, rabbit with winter vegetables and lentils, and a dessert of pear poached in birch beer, bruleed pear jelly, sasparilla foam, crumble, pistachio cake, and rootbeer ice cream. Stayed up drinking wine and mead. Ate a lot of candy. Saw Django Unchained and ate a green chile burger.
21: Did you fall in love in 2012?
Yes.
22: What was your favorite TV program?
I haven't watched much television this year at all.
23: Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Well I think I actively loathe and despise a fair number of politicians I didn't know existed last year.
24: What was the best book you read?
2017 by Olga Slavnikova was beautiful and strange in the way the greatest Russian literature is.
25: What was your greatest musical discovery?
Grendel. One of my friends introduced me to them and it reawakened a part of my brain dormant for too long.
26: What did you want and get?
Boots, music, dancing, travel
27: What did you want and not get?
I don't really know - I suppose resolution from some awful personal situations.
28: What was your favorite film of this year?
I enjoyed the hell out of Looper, and Killer Joe.
29: What one thing made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Overcoming my shyness and putting myself out on the dance floor. Dancing has saved me in some ways.
30: How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
Blue jeans and black band tshirts.
31: What kept you sane?
Dancing.
32: Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I have a mad crush on Charlize Theron. Also Sparkles* from Area 11.
33: What political issue stirred you the most?
The issue of reproductive health care and rights.
34: Who did you miss?
My friends in far away places. James.
35: Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
There is no point in worrying so much about whether you look cool or stupid or if anyone gives a damn about what you are doing. Life is so painfully, brutally short and unfair. Better to do the things that make you happy, have the hair cut you want to have and fuck everything else.
36: Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
I would scream myself to sleep
if it would shatter the illusion
But I can't give in to this
It's the noise that makes me human
