“I pray for James Williford and his family every night,” he said. “I ask God to forgive me, and I ask God to take care of (Williford’s) family. I hope one day they find it in their heart to forgive me for what I did.”

Authorities say Hernandez stole the pickup about 3:30 p.m. on June 15, 2012. When a police officer attempted to pull him over, Hernandez drove onto the shoulder of Loop 360 and fled, weaving in and out traffic at speeds faster than 95 mph, witnesses testified.

Hernandez plowed the truck into a Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Williford after running a red light near Pack Saddle Pass on the West Ben White Boulevard frontage road, court records said. Williford, 32, died from blunt force injuries.

Hernandez fled on foot into a nearby Dollar General store, where he attempted to change his clothes and was chased and captured by police officers back on the street.

On Thursday, Hernandez told jurors he had been scared and only thinking about escape. He did not know he had killed someone until after his arrest, and he asked officers “to take me around back and shoot me.”
