wednesday reading

What I just finished reading:
Robots: the recent a.i., a short story collection edited by Horton & Wallace. I found it very enjoyable as there were several quite different robots and artificial intelligences present. I enjoy the presence of robots and androids and AI in my literature.

What I am currently reading:
The Sacred Book of the Werewolf by Victor Pelevin. This is not the first novel from him that uses the werewolf to talk about some serious problems in contemporary Russia. It's by turns strange and funny, and Pelevin is pretty much the spiritual heir to Bulgakov.

What I plan to read next:
I'm thinking about reading some Ian Banks. It's a shitty thing to do, take up an author just when you hear he is dying. I picked up The Wasp Factory and The Steep Approach to Garbadale from the library. If I'm not up to that, I shall plunge into this enormous history of food fashion trends in America from the 1920s to the end of the century. I've already read a chapter of it and I learned of the most horrifying 1920s salad recipe in existence - Banana Popcorn Salad. It's very simple. You put a big piece of iceberg lettuce on the plate. Then you chop a whole banana onto it. Then throw on some popcorn. Liberally daub the nightmare with mayonnaise, and serve to your guests with your assurances of its evil fashion.

(I'm not even kidding this is an actual recipe)

On that horrifying note, I need a coffee.
