thanksgiving
Nov. 28th, 2015 03:08 pmFor Thanksgiving, I roasted a hen. I put stuffing in it, and trussed it, and the damn thing came out nice. I've never done a whole bird before, and granted it was small but I feel quite pleased with myself. I also made stuffing on my own for the first time. (Alan and I once made stuffing, I remember) My theory lately is that if a recipe asks for something like a quarter cup of water, the best thing to do is just use some wine or some whiskey. So far, this has worked well. We had some cheap red wine and it made things nice.
There were also a lot of mashed potatoes, some simple cranberries, brioche rolls, maple pecan pie, and some mac & cheese for Mike from Whole Foods.
God I love this time of year. It feels good to be cold, and to cook. Mike made something like ten or twelve dozen cookies yesterday in his annual cookie baking. The tessellated cookie cutters make that so much easier.
Talked a lot this week with friends about shame, and changing it in our lives.
On Friday, I woke up at 3:05am to go to work. It was dumb. It was also hot and raining, which meant I sweated through my clothes while I moved stuff for the Black Friday displays. I tweaked a muscle in my back carrying tons of roasting pans.
It was not as bad as working in somewhere like the big box stores. But it was crowded and tiring, and working in higher end retail means you get super tired of people making comments about the prices. On the bright side, I have this utterly adorable new coworker who I want to be friends with outside of work. So that made life a little more bearable.
The weather finally changed last night, dropping into the chill at last. I fell asleep before 9pm because I was so exhausted. I'm hoping to make it a little later tonight. But right now it is time for the movies, and the glorious comfort of the cinema.
